Philip Lennard Photography has been in existence now for over 30 years.
It was when I was given my first camera as a birthday present that I became intrigued
with what you could see & do with a camera.
I think my first camera was a Kodak Instamatic back in 1977. It didn’t take long for me
to update to an SLR & started developing my own photographs in a friend’s darkroom.
At the time, I had just completed my hairdressing apprenticeship. My boss at the time
asked me if I could bring my camera along to a hair show & take some shots of the
hair models that he had hired, for some images that we could hang in the salon.
I jumped at the opportunity. I mean, I was 17 at the time & being asked to photograph
all these beautiful looking models……well, who wouldn’t right?
The shots turned out really well & it wasn’t long before other hairdressers were asking
me to do some promotional shots for their salons. I was making more money doing
this than I was from actually cutting hair.
After a few years of juggling the two things together, I was offered a three year contract over in New York setting up hair competitions & shows for a well known hair company, which of course, I accepted.
It was during my time over there that my interest in photography went to the next level. There was so much to photograph over there and I was really in my element.
I fell in love with the architecture in NY & took my camera with me everywhere, taking photos of everything that I saw. It was also at this time, that I was paid for my very first photograph of something other than hair models. I thought, wow, being paid for something I was passionate about. How good is this?
After three years, my contract was up & I returned to Australia with new found vigor. I wanted to concentrate on photography as a full time career but having just married & with a mortgage & a child on the way, I went back into a hair salon environment working for a boss but soon was given an opportunity to open up my own salon in Melbourne. Before long, I had four salons & life was great. I was still taking photographs whenever time allowed but after a personal tragedy, I decided that life was too short to not take a chance & do what I had always wanted to do. Become a full time professional photographer. So I hung up the scissors, bit the bullet & was on my way to living my passion.
